Duncan Beckley has been the conductor at Holme Silver for 5 years having returned to the band after a time away with other local bands.

Duncan was born in London, but his family moved shortly afterwards to Wakefield, West Yorkshire.  He started playing the Flugelhorn at 10 years of age and progressed to the tuba, which he played with many brass bands. He is now a conductor, band trainer, school teacher and adjudicator and travels widely conducting bands throughout Great Britain and Northern Ireland.  He is currently musical director of Newstead Brass Band in the championship section.

Duncan is a member of the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators (ABBA) and is in increasing demand in this role which he greatly enjoys, having judged at national and area contest level.

Duncan was Musical Director for the national professional theatre tour of “Brassed Off”, finishing at The National Theatre, London.  He also appeared in the film “The Full Monty” and has also made other TV appearances.

Holme Silver Band was officially founded in the village of Holme outside the busy town of Holmfirth in 1865 by Samuel Broadhead, though records suggest there had been a Band in the village from around 1830. In it’s early years the Band rehearsed in the row of cottages that now make up the Bridge Tavern, just down the road in Holmbridge. However, in 1924 members and supporters gave their time voluntarily to construct a purpose-built bandroom at Holme Bank, which remains the Band’s home to this day. We have enjoyed a long association with the BBC Television series Last of the Summer Wine and have appeared in a number of episodes, as well as taking part in recordings and other projects.
